Sump Pump Maintenance

Sump Pump Maintenance

Pump manufacturers make different recommendations to maintain their pumps. Check with the manufacturer to see their recommendations for your specific pump, but some will mention to run the pump every two to three months. Others recommend doing it once a year, prior to the rainy season.

Suggestions made by manufacturers are:

- Ensure the pump works by filling the sump pit with water
- Ensure the sump pump is discharging water outside, as intended. Some times the pump may run, but not pump water out.
- If you have installed a backup sump pump, disconnect the main pump to see it works as intended. Ensure to plug the main one back in afterwards.
- In the discharge line, check the air hole and clean it out if needed.
- Run the motor to listen for any unusual noises
- Replacement of back-up sump pump battery (every 2 to 3 years)

Awesome post ! If anyone have a trabble with a sump pump ......Then I would start simple and begin with number 1 and 2 and gradually make your way down the list. It may be one thing here or a combination of several. With this in mind, take the time to ensure you have checked everything before diagnosing a solution.

One other note: If you do not have a check valve installed on your discharge line, I would seriously contemplate putting one in Pump Area. Thanks!
