Comparing one sump pump to another is very difficult, as no standardized tests are available that will grade the pump as low, medium or high quality or the length of time it will last. Some things to look for when purchasing a sump pump:
- Automatic Operation: automatic sump pumps are designed to turn on whenever water builds up in the sump pit. A manual pump requires action by the homeowner, and the less the homeowner has to remember to do, the better it is.
- Manufacturer Reputation: research on the internet how long the company has been in business and reviews given by other consumers. Also, check to ensure they are a member of the Sump and Sewage Pump Manufacturers Association (SSPMA).
- Warranty: Keep your eye out for a good warranty. Most companies offer about one to two years. So anything less than one year should raise concern about sump pump quality.
- Tested / Made to SSPMA Standards: look for sump pumps with the SSPMA Certified label on them, as this indicates it was made and tested according to the SSPMA Recommended Standards for Sump, Effluent and Sewage Pumps.
- Oil-Filled Motor: electric pumps are cooled by air or oil, and running a cool motor ensures longevity of the pump. Manufacturers believe oil-filled motors run cooler, thus being better for your sump pump to last longer.
