Incorrectly Sized Sump Pump

Incorrectly Sized Sump Pump

In case of a sump pump, size does matter. This does not mean that bigger is better though. Many believe having a bigger sump pump will remove more water and be more efficient. If a pump is larger than is needed, it will cycle on and off more times and will result in a shorter pump life. Using too small of a sump pump can cause it to run for too long and run too hot, or it may not even be able to pump enough water out as needed. Both reasons will shorten the pump's life.

The sump pump should be sized by the installer based on a calculated amount of water that needs to be pumped out. This is referred as capacity and you may find this measured in gallons per minute. Also, the height and length the water needs to be pumped will factor in the calculation. Ask your installer for the pump capacity chart and their calculations, to ensure they have properly made this calculation.

If calculations are not shown by the installer, have them find out the specifications from the sump pump manufacturer. The manufacturer, based on a few questions, should be able to inform you of the proper size of the sump pump over the phone.
