Improper Installation of Sump Pump
Improper Installation of Sump Pump
If an installer does not follow manufacturers guidelines, problems may arise. Take a look at the owner's manual and read the instructions yourself to see if you notice the installer swaying away from the manufacturers instructions.
Some mistakes that occur during sump pump installation are:
- A check valve is normally required to be installed on the discharge line by most manufacturers. When it is not installed, the pump impeller can rotate backwards (due to backflow of water) and unscrew off the motor shaft. This will cause the motor to run, but not pump any water which is the main purpose of the sump pump!
- Manufacturers may require a small air relief hole to be drilled in the discharge line between the pump and check valve. Make sure to check if this is needed, as it is intended to prevent the pump from overcoming the air pressure in the discharge pipe.
- Ensure the discharge pipe is the proper diameter as indicated in the owner's manual.
- Improperly installing the pump in the electrical circuit. A dedicated electrical circuit is required, meaning its on its own circuit because it needs the 10 to 15 amps of power to start up that most electrical circuits have.
- The electrical outlet may not be grounded. Use a circuit to test this.
- Use of an extension cord! DO not use an extension cord for the power to the sump pump and ensure the cord you use does not interfere with the operation of the pump.
- The sump pit not having a solid bottom. With dirt or gravel bottoms, you risk the chance that large rocks and debris will enter the pump and cause the impeller to get stuck.
- Not removing all dirt and debris out of the sump pit before installation.
- The check valve is installed backwards. Ensure the arrow on the check valve is point in the direction of the flow of water.
As you can see, many errors can cause sump pump problems immediately or in the future! Protect your investment in a sump pump: Ensure you do not do the common mistakes as listed above.
