Primary and Back-up Sump Pumps

A sump pump may be installed in two different ways. The installation can be as primary or back-up pumps. Single pump installations are considered as a primary pump (Primary pumps are electricity or water-powered). Finding two pumps installed indicates one as a backup sump pump. Two types of backup sump pumps exist.

Emergency DC with Battery Back-up Type and AC Power Recharging Unit -- You will find either of these sump pumps as pedestal or submersible pumps. A battery pack is always being charged in these pumps by the homes source of power (120 volt electrical power). Only drawback for this is every two years you are recommended to replace the battery, and if you forget, the sump pump may fail when it is needed. So remember to replace your batteries.

Emergency Water-Powered Back-up Type - As mentioned in a previous post (Different Types of Sump Pumps), they use city water to power the pumps and need no electricity. They may be used for primary or emergency back-up pump purposes.
