Pedestal Type - these sump pumps work with an open motor supported on a column that would be attached to the pump casing (also why this type is called column type sump pump). The motor does not go under the water, and sits outside the sump on the basement floor.

Submersible Type - these types of sump pumps are designed to be hidden within the sump, and do not allow water in. They attach to the pump casing and are immersed in water.

Water-Powered Type - these type of sump pumps use city water to power the pump, and no electricity is needed in its operation. Between 40psi and 80psi of water pressure is required to ensure these pumps function and once the pressure drops below this amount, the pump ceases to function. This type of sump pump may not be an option for basements with lots of water problems.
